Portfolio
My writing career started in sixth grade when I wrote a short story about my stepfather’s imaginary ability to hear a flea walking across Route 44, a U.S. highway about a mile from where I grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts. Encouraged by the stars and smiley faces scrawled across my white-lined paper, my inner writer was born.
I landed my first gig in high school as a reporter, then as the managing editor of the school paper. Those positions blossomed into stints as a section editor of my high school yearbook and chief editor of the literary magazine. After getting a degree in journalism from UMass Amherst, I was on my way to becoming a Pulitzer prize-winning reporter.
Here’s what really happened. I spent less than two years in the newspaper business. I loved writing articles, meeting new people and learning about new subjects, but I quickly discovered that I needed to work in a healthier and more nurturing profession. Plus, I’ll level with you. If you don’t know, the hours and pay for a cub reporter are anything but glamorous.
That’s how I found myself in marketing and public relations. I still get to write, meet new people, learn about new things and have a lot more fun doing it. Whether I am cranking out press releases, blog posts and web content or scribbling thank you notes and birthday party invitations, writing ranks among eating, sleeping and breathing when it comes to my daily essentials.
